Japanese individuals who aspire to pursue graduate studies in the United States, without a specific connection to a particular researcher, often rely on a prominent American benchmark known as The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, commonly identified by terms like “R1” and “R2”
In my case, I had frequently encountered indices like the Nature Index due to my professional involvement, but I only recently became aware of this one (realizing I had been attending a U.S. university without prior knowledge). I believe it’s highly unlikely that such a classification system will be developed in Japan.
