Sannenzaka Correspondence

Editors’ Diary 23/07/2023

While conversing with a former colleague, a journalist working at a regional bureau of a news agency, I couldn’t help but ponder the contrasting situation between my overseas experiences, where I have been fortunate to have supportive colleagues in places like Geneva, Switzerland, and the current domestic reality where my affiliation is limited solely to the University of Tokyo. The dearth of dependable individuals here weighs heavily on me.

However, there is a glimmer of hope, as a veteran economic reporter, who once served as my confidant during my early days as a newcomer, recently reached out to me. This contact has evoked a palpable sense that the winds of change are finally blowing in Tokyo.

Though I was genuinely intrigued by the UCLA program, which also presented an opportunity for a vacation, circumstances seem to align favorably for my return to journalistic endeavors. Hence, I am resolute in dedicating my full efforts to resume my career as a reporter.
